Winter Warmers: Comforting Indian Recipes for Cold Days

As the temperature drops and the chill sets in, there's nothing quite like a warm, comforting meal to lift the spirit. So we thought, rather than the same old recipes, this time around why not make the most of the traditional rustic winter warmer recipes? Indian cuisine, with its rich flavors and hearty ingredients, offers a variety of dishes that are perfect for the cold days. And here we have made a list of four comforting Indian recipes that will warm you up from the inside out.


Think of winter and the first thing that comes to our mind is a soup. So the first recipe on the list is - Gahat (Kulthi) Soup, a traditional dish from the northern regions of India. This hearty soup is made using Gahat/ Kulthi or horse gram which is simmered with garlic, ginger, and tomatoes. Such thick and flavorful Gahat Soup is rich in protein, fiber, and essential minerals, making it an excellent choice for a healthy and filling meal on a cold day.

Then comes Thukpa, a traditional noodle soup that originated in Tibet but is also popular in the northeastern regions of India, particularly in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. This nutritious dish is made with whole wheat noodles, a variety of vegetables, and a flavorful broth. Thukpa can be customized with different proteins such as chicken, tofu, or paneer, making it a versatile and balanced meal in itself. The soup is seasoned with ginger, garlic, and a blend of spices, creating a comforting and nourishing dish that is perfect for cold weather.


Next we have a luxurious and flavorful dish that is perfect for special occasions and cold winter nights - Mutton Raan. This dish features a whole leg of lamb marinated in a blend of yogurt, spices, and herbs, which is then slow-cooked until tender and juicy. The marinade typically includes ingredients like garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, and garam masala, which infuse the meat with rich, aromatic flavors. The slow-cooking process ensures that the lamb is incredibly tender and falls off the bone. Mutton Raan is often served with naan or rice, making it a hearty and satisfying meal.


Finally we have Rogan Josh which is a classic dish from the Kashmir region of India, known for its rich and aromatic flavors as well as vibrant red colour. This hearty curry is made with tender pieces of lamb or goat, slow-cooked in a fragrant blend of spices. Rogan Josh is often garnished with fresh coriander and served with steamed rice or naan, making it a comforting and satisfying meal that embodies the essence of rustic Indian cuisine.
