Has it happened to you? You visit a restaurant, ask for the menu and even after spending some time browsing, a lot of discussion ensues and no consensus is reached as regards what to order as starters and main course? What do you do then? Order Soup, right? At least that is what we do, so that it doesn't look silly.
In restaurants, soups are served for a couple of reasons. One, it is a part of the meal, two, soups increase appetite and third adds to the revenues.
One also has soups at home, when he/she is suffering from a bout of fever/flu, has lost appetite or simply wants to have a light, yet nutritious meal.
Interesting right? Soups can be a meal, have a (somewhat) medicinal value and of course, the start to a great dining experience.
Yes, there are ready-to-cook soups available, but it defeats the purpose of a soup. Here are some soups you can try like we do when we dine out.
Vegetable Soups
Thank goodness there are plenty of options to choose from in Vegetable Soups and across cuisines too. There is Chinese, Indian, Thai, Italian besides the many fusion soup recipes. These options are a boon for my mother and her siblings who are vegetarian. I know what they will end up ordering. It will be either a Tomato Soup, a Clear Soup or Sweet Corn Soup. For me, it usually is the Clear Vegetable Soup. With minimal flavouring, this soup is my favourite as I know our next courses are going to get heavier and spicier.
Cream of Mushroom Soup
Cream of Mushroom Soup is for the foodies in our clan. The ones who ‘appreciate’ edible fungi, like mushrooms. This lot is often poked fun at for their choice of soup, that has mushrooms. It is always a verbal war at the dining tables over mushrooms. The other party is keen to know what ‘new’ can be made from mushrooms. A mildly-spiced, creamy soup is perfect for bruschetta or garlic bread.
French Onion Soup
Some of the family members, and these are the very few who appreciate French Onion Soup. They are the ‘food connoisseurs’ in our family. This simple, flavoured soup has a dash of mustard paste besides the black pepper and a little of mozzarella and processed cheese go into it. Also, interestingly it is served with buttered bread triangles topped with cheeses. The French you see!
With these classic soups, I am sure you are looking forward to relish soups. Try the soup recipes with the links given.
