Pizza, pasta, risotto, panzenella, calzone, focaccia, did we leave anything out? No! We had ticked off every possible Italian food item off our list. It was time for desserts! Yoooohoo! After all that fabulous and heavy Italian meal and the long walk me and my cousins took to digest it, we were eager to gulp down the desserts.
I am a pro at my knowledge of Italian main course, so ordering those dishes was not a problem. Desserts, yes, it did take some time as we were a group of six and so we browsed the menu cards, a lot of discussion followed, among us, with the waiters, managers and then finally we shortlisted three desserts for the night. Was it really that tough you must be thinking? In the next trip we will order another three that I have already shortlisted. Here’s a list of what we ordered that day.
Tiramisu
Tiramisu, in Italian means ‘pick me up’ and is Italy’s most famous desserts that crazy Italian food fans rave about. This coffee-flavoured treat tastes super awesome. Traditionally, lady’s fingers soaked in coffee are layered onto which mascarpone mixed with whipped cream is generously slathered. Our Tiramisu had soft sponge cake and was heavy on the coffee side, with a dusting of the coffee powder. The serving portion was just right too, as in enough to order for one more, which we did.
Torrone
A classic Italian confectionery made from assorted nuts, berries and egg whites. Torrone, reminds me of our desi chikki, albeit the former is a much higher version of the desi treat. It takes quite a bit of a skill to get that perfect consistency. I am planning to make a simpler version of this delicacy. Also, I noticed this candy particularly uses white chocolate. Interesting! Probably, one of the few best ways of making white-chocolate based desserts.
Crostata
Small is beautiful. Like our Apple and Pear Crostata. Before these small Crostata tarts arrived on a platter it was the wonderful aroma of the pastry, the heavenly whiff of cinnamon that was wafting. I knew I was in for something really amazing. As per my expectations, one bite of this warm, flaky pastry, and I kind of went into a trance. So delicious and oh so delectable. The soft cream mixture and that perfect crisp, crumbly crust was such a delight! Apple and pear really made a winning combo in this tart.
It was sorpredente (amazing). Deliciosa prelibatezze (yummy delicacies) really. Fabulous desserts each one. I am sure you are as eager to try these recipes especailly with the recipe links that I have shared. I can’t wait to try the other three.
