Some days all you need is food other than the usual fare. Those times when you just do not wish to have daily food. You do want a change but your stomach doesn’t feel full without your usual dal-roti. Now we have a problem. Mexican or Chinese would be great, but the heart, oops, the stomach, wants what it wants. The feeling of having eaten the usual, but for the heart and eyes, craves a different fare.
That’s when I thought of these options, which can be had as is or paired with something that’s not so elaborate.
Naan
Naan, the oblong, leavened flatbread is what I would like to have today. See na, a piping hot naan, fresh from tandoor, with garlic flavour and cheese that’s somewhere between about to melt and in solid form. Really no Naan sense! And that lovely glaze of butter. Delicious. What do I have it with? Dal Makhani, Dal Tadka, Butter Chicken or Chicken Tikka Masala. Yum. But then, I will not get into cooking the elaborate accompaniments. So will have as is or with a bit of pickle or maybe a Schezwan sauce or a Chipotle sauce to dip into.
Dal Soup
I am so done with the usual Tomato, Manchow soup and Genovese (from Genoa, Italy) soups. Luckily, got to know of an interesting soup option from my health-conscious friend. Dal Soup, this one is made from split red lentils (masoor dal) and carotene-rich foods, viz, pumpkin, carrot and tomato. Yes and it's not bland ok. It has chives, burnt garlic for garnish and of course, flavourful coriander.
Lamb Chops
Just like that, no particular reason why I picked Brazilian Lamb Chops and turns out that Brazilian cooking is quite interesting too. I am amazed to know that Brazilian cuisine is influenced by African, Amerindian, Asian and European cuisines. The influence varies depending on what part of Brazil it is. This interesting recipe has Italian lemon, Indian black pepper and white wine too. Feels great to have the taste of the world, or at least a part of it.
Chutney
Batata wada is incomplete without it, sandwiches HAVE two of these on the side, samosa is unimaginable with it, idli and dosa are by default served with it and every full sit-down meal has a place for it. What is it? It’s the humble Chutney. Fresh coconut or dried, flax seeds, peanuts, kokam, fruits and even peels, chutneys are among the earliest forms of uncooked food that the early humans consumed. Amazing right? I am a little weird, I might even ask for chutney with my Brazilian Lamb Chops.
I am sure this happens with you too and with these recipes that I shared, you will surely have a great time dining.
