School Holiday Meal Plan - From Breakfast To Dinner!

The dilemma of ‘what to cook’ takes a toll on most of us. Especially with school holidays, kids demand for something new and tasty each day. As a parent, planning such a fun yet nutritious meal every single day can often be hectic. Let’s be honest though, not just our kids, even we secretly wish for something hatke on the menu each day! Afterall, school holidays are the days when you can actually sit down together with your kids as a family and enjoy hearty meals while creating memories.

Besides, us Indians are blessed with a rich culinary heritage that brings to us such a wide variety of recipes to choose from. The popular thalis like the Rajasthani thali, Navratri thali or the traditional feast for Onam Sadya and even some other lesser known thalis like Naga Thali, Haryanavi Thali etc., each one surprises the taste buds in their own way.

This is why we have decided to plan a complete meal from breakfast to dinner just so that you can enjoy the day with your family before the school holidays finish.

Breakfast- Idiyappam

Begin the day with Kerala’s homely Idiyappam aka String Hoppers. To make this delicate Idiyappam, rice flour dough must be first hand pressed into noodle thin swirls, then steamed like idlis. The intricate process appears daunting but with the right consistency of the rice flour dough and little practice, it gets simple. Serve this Idiyappam  with stew for a wonderful tummy filling breakfast.

For lunch simply make Mussel Stir Fry, a wholesome one course meal prepared with seafood and noodles served hot garnished with spring onion greens. This delicious stir fry fills up the tummy as well as heart with pure joy, making it perfect for your family’s summer vacation lunch.

Then around 4pm serve your kids a glass full of cold chocolate milkshake along with yummy Raw Banana Fritters. These shallow fried raw banana munchies get ready within no time, and are a guaranteed hit amongst the kids, making it perfect for the afternoon.

At the dinner you can serve two Kerala specialities -Nadan Kozhi Varuthathu and Malabar Parota! Dinner must be elaborate, so we choose this classic chicken curry for you. Nadan Kozhi Varuthathu is made by cooking beautifully marinated chicken pieces in coconut milk curry which tastes amazing when served with crispy Malabar Parota made using refined flour.

Finally, no meal, especially a school holiday meal isn't complete without a dessert! So, call it a day by serving a bowl of warm Raw Banana Halwa. To make this halwa, mash bananas until soft and pulpy, and cook it with milk and sugar till the mixture reaches halwa consistency. While serving garnish it with slivered cashewnuts, pistachios and almonds.

We hope you try out this meal plan with your loved ones soon. Happy holidays, and happy cooking!
