Classic South Indian Accompaniments

All our loved recipes have a friend of their own, which adds extra value to the recipe itself. These friends, also called as accompaniments, enhance palatability when served together with something. When thinking of such food accompaniments, the first ones that come to our mind are condiments like ketchup, our beloved pickle, green chutney, raita and a lot more. However, this time we thought of bringing together some classic south Indian food accompaniments which make their food friend extra tasty when served together.

Coconut Chutney :

Be it a dosa, idli or medu vada, one thing that it is always paired with is - ‘Coconut Chutney’. Mind you, it is not just a recipe, it is a kitchen superhero. This beloved little condiment turns every dish into a flavor fiesta, giving all the recipes a 10x tastier upgrade. The creamy nuttiness adds a touch of magic, making every bite an exquisite journey. Truly enough, it is a classic South Indian accompaniment which makes the dining experience unforgettable!

Sambar :

Next up is yet another popular accompaniment from the south- sambar. This versatile recipe can be enjoyed with idli, dosa, medu vada and rice too. Besides being tasty in itself, the combination of dal, veggies and other flavorings gives an instant warmth to the body. You can use different vegetables like white radish, ladyfingers, pumpkin, brinjal, sambhar onion, etc., either individually or in any combination to make it even more tasty. In south India, each family has their own style of making sambhar, you adapt your own!

Rasam :

Then we have rasam, a tangy and spicy south Indian curry with a thin consistency that people always consume in large quantities. No meal in a Tamilian house is complete without rasam. It is absolutely easy to prepare, easy to consume, and comes with flavours that one cannot resist. Generally, the traditional household recipe is seen to be passed on from one generation to the other, making it wholesome. Serve it with some piping hot rice and enjoy.

Puttu and Kadala Curry :

Finally we have a readymade combo, or you can also call it a match made in heaven - Kerala’s famous Puttu and Kadala Curry. Puttu, made using rice flour and coconut, then shaped into a special cylinder shape looks very inviting, and when you accompany this with the Kadala curry which flaunts its flavours, your mood goes from ‘aayioo’ to ‘woohoo’ in no time. Puttu and Kadala Curry compliment each other very well, making it a must try recipe.

We hope you enjoyed your journey on the South Indian accompaniments with us. Try them at home with your companion to celebrate the taste in every bite.
